I was at a meeting at KP with Chi-Hua Chien listening to a company called TVU Networks that enables people to set up their own Internet TV Channel. During the presentation, I was able to sign up, install, set up and start broadcasting - a 24 x 7 kiteboarding movie channel. 12 minutes, start to finish. It's to the right - on the sidebar below my profile - (either go to TVUnetworksand download the player, or if you click on the blank spot under'24x7movies' an installer will come up in 2 minutes to ask you to install it) :

Here are instructions if you want to add this to your page. Blogger allows java script on the sidebar template, but not in the posts. there is a way around this which I willpost later, that requires external javascript file hosting.

The standalone TVU player can be downloaded on TVU that will let you watch thousands of other content channels.

You can also create your own streaming channel by following the 'broadcaster' instructions on the TVU website.

A Collection of Videos for the IPOD

It took me a while to figure out an efficient way to transcode my favorite kiting DVDs into a format that fit the Video IPOD. Here are a handful of them:

after downloading and placing them into the folder you want, (and merging if the files were big and split into two pieces), just go to itunes and go to "File" then "Add File to Library" and add it. It will synch if you have itunes set that way, or just drag the icon of the video when in the Movies Library to the icon representing your IPOD and it will be copied over.

The EETimes ACE awards - awards for creativity and leadership in the field of electronics - were held last night at the Fairmont in San Jose. I had the honor of judging and getting a close up look at all the nominees and products.

Every year I attend this event I experience a reawakening. the pace of innovation is so strong and so consistent here, that after a few years, it's easy to mistake it for a background hummmmmm like the one I forget to hear when driving my 20 year old BMW.

At the awards I WAKE UP and am excitedly reminded of how unusual this place really is - and why I came here in the first place. Where else in the world will you find 1,000 people screaming and cheering louder than fans at a rock concert for an a 500 megasample per second A/D converter? or a squiggle motor? I ran into a really fun startup called SCRIBD that allows one to upload virtually any type of document in almost any file format to upload and share to the web. Here's an example of a word doc with text and .jpg files uploaded, converted to flash, and shared. Here is a doc on kiteboarding for 15 minutes in 40 MPH winds:

Once a DVD file is backed up onto your hard drive, it may be too big to print onto a DVD -R disc. If os, you might try THIS software, which will allow you to compress it down into a 4.7 gig disk. the SW also allows remixing and has other interesting features.

DVD File Structures

The process of sharing DVD's is the same as it is for audio files (mp3) or other video files (avi, wmv, quicktime) - with one exception. Files intended for playback on a PC usually are one file = one piece of content.

With DVD's there are a whole bunch of files that make up the content (per chapter, per menu, and also one for audio).

After you have downloaded them, you get a pile o' stuff that will probably look unfamiliar. Don't be confused if you see a bunch of file types that look like the picture shown. Once you have them just copy as is onto a blank DVD disk. After that, just put it in your DVD player!! Here are a couple other helpful links:

Here's a look at website traffic to a handful of VC funds - measured by Alexa. The big increase in CRV's traffic was from our announcement of Quickstart. Sequoia's spike is from their relaunch in October of their website. To see it clearly, just click on it. test - turning Google Pages into a webserver to my blog for some of my files. it appears to take a fair amount of time to download enough of the file to start playing (but it DOES allow streaming / progressive download) before booting a player.

Here is a test file G - from a hack turing google pages into a file server for my blog. No Zip or unzip required. Bitrate limited by user downstream. Issues : limits on file sizes and aggregate space available. Difficult interface to manage files for the adminstrator. downloads dont always work for big files for some reason. need to debug.

AVVENU to DVD content for my friends

Draft post on sharing a FULL DVD -- can;t email it, BUT, I can make it available for a 'trickle download' off my HDD using AVVENU. In this case, ill only put up thw wmv format, but i'll know w/n I can share full DVD files.

Ever try to email a DVD file?!?!? Haaaahhh..... impossible. Here's a solution for SHARING a MOVIE. I can use AVVENU to allow a friend to download a DVD right off my hard drive at home.
Here is the cover art for the movie - called UPWIND - The Launch of Kiteboarding.

This movie was produced and freely distributed by RED BULL, who has been the sponsor of the "King of the Air" contest in maui ever since the contest began. The DVD covers the evolution of the sport, the equipment, and the riders from that vantage point, providing insight from people like Robby Naish, Shawn Richman, Flash Austin,and Susi Mai, among many others who were there, are there, and have been there from the beginning of the sport as we know it. I have fond memories of the first board I ever bought which was a Naish "Flash Austin signature model" so I'm putting that chapter of the DVD up for download. This particular chapter ends abruptly, so remember that - your file structure is fine...

I have 2 versions of that chapter (.wmv - 18M and DVD - 270M) available. 270M will take 40 minutes at 100kbps uplink speed. If you click windows media format you can download a file that will play on your PC in a standard media player. If you click DVD File you can download a DVD file. In either case, click on 'download' (upper right) and it will come down to your PC in a zip file. Unzip it to a new folder and you can either play it by opening windows media player and using "file, open". Enjoy!!

download / stream? this is an avi file If logged into mail account, and 'open or save' is presented. Selecting open results in a download. no progressive streaming.

download / stream? this is a quicktime file 'open or save' is presented, 'open' produces a zip file to click on. Apparently, no streaming.

download / pdf file? this is a pdf file same as above

view pdf file ? view pdf as html long delay, then a viewer WITHOUT images comes up, with an option presented to download the file.

view word doc? this is a word doc - view as html very straightforward, fast presentation of text, with an option to download.

download word doc? download word doc straight, fast 'open or save'. 'open' presents the full document.

download notepad txt file? this is a note pad file just like above.

view notepad txt file? this is a note pad file delay, then presentation in a reader; no 'save as' or 'download' function.

download mp3? this is an mp3 file 'open or save' presented. 'open' produces a download then my default player opens.
